Becoming an Ultrasound Technician
There are several ways one can go about becoming an ultrasound technician. Ultrasound technicians may acquire their sonography training in hospitals, vocational/technical institutions, the armed forces, or in colleges and universities. Some training programs prefer applicants who have experience within the healthcare field as well as those high school graduates who have rich backgrounds in math, health and science.
Many colleges and universities offer both two and four year degree programs. Students can earn either a 2-year associate’s degree or a 4-year bachelor’s degree at nearly any mid to large size college or university in the United States. Most ultrasound technicians working today have earned associate’s degrees in sonography. Courses one must complete and pass include anatomy, physics, physiology, patient care and medical ethics.
Some one year programs are accepted as proper education by many employers. The successful completion of a one year program results in a student receiving a vocational certificate.
No US states require that ultrasound technicians be licensed. However, becoming credentialed by a professional certifying body is preferred by most employers. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography or ARDMS certifies each person who successfully passes the exam to become a registered diagnostic sonographer or ultrasound technician.
If you are interested in becoming a ultrasound technician you should have excellent communication and interpersonal skills as you will be working closely with patients, doctors and other medical personnel. It is also important that you enjoy learning as you will be required to enroll in educational courses regularly so that you are kept abreast of changes in the field of ultrasound technology.
Becoming an ultrasound technician through training received at a hospital is how some people break into the field of sonography. Many nurses and nursing assistants choose this route as they become interested in ultrasound technology through their frequent interactions with hospital sonography departments. This is a great way of becoming an ultrasound technician because often the hospital providing the training will offer the student employment as ultrasound technician once he/she complete the training program. Learning to become an ultrasound technician in an authentic hospital environment is very advantageous for rather obvious reasons.
Becoming an ultrasound technician offers many benefits. The job market is very good within this career choice as there are many doctor’s offices, hospitals, clinics and veterinary offices that hire qualified ultrasound technicians on an on-going basis. You must enjoy working closely with people and you should possess some basic problem solving skills. It also comes in handy to have a background working within the healthcare field in some capacity as many prospective employers are looking for candidates who have experience working with patients.
